Total freedom is what drives B. J. to express her art within the limitations of her vivid imagination and varied technical skills. Being unique and including surprises in her work are important, but what really matters to her is her ability to evoke a reaction in her viewers. Their response and the message they receive are the most satisfying; same piece of artwork, different reaction, different message.

Urban Retreat

copyright 2007

  27" W x 21" H

As a child, my siblings and I explored our woodlot at the rear of our 100 acre farm.  As a teenager and later as a young adult, I retreated to this same peaceful and fragrant area to work out some of my confusions about life.   Now as an adult who lives in a city, I wish for everyone to have a place to go where birds' songs are loud and clear, where colourful flowers bloom profusely, and where trees live and die in their natural time - a place for thinking, meditating or working things out.  The gate is ajar.  Enter.  Be part of my fantasy.

Wildfire

27" W x 8" H

Spontaneous beading and erratic machine quilting with various threads on this smouldering background
create the illusions of vicious sparks and fire gone out-of-control. The most effective way to express my feelings for this piece and the unpredictable force of nature it depicts,as through this original haiku poem

-savage wildfires rage
sparks and haze take life starts new
spring follows winter

Passion

18" W x 18" H (Triangle)

This Artquilt was created to honour women and to urge them to explore and enjoy their instinctive 'wild-side'.
The triangle (the universal symbol for female) creates an enticing backdrop for the voluptuous, 46-piece wild rose. Often called 'The Queen of the Flowers', the rose represents many things. It is the symbol for great accomplishment and excellence, for beauty, for health and healing and for eroticism. More specifically, the red rose is a sign of 'passion'.
In ancient times, rose petals covered the floors, sometimes knee-deep, at the orgies given by flamboyant Roman hosts.
The engorged red rose on the flesh-toned triangle, surrounded by hair-like yarn is a woman freely engrossed in passion. Inspired by Judy Chicago's 'The Dinner Party'

a rose for … Carol Miller – a woman with a passion

36 " wide x 36 " high

Appliqué, machine quilted, hand embroidered and beaded

Often called ‘The Queen of the Flowers’, the rose represents great accomplishment, excellence, beauty, health, healing, and passion.  We give roses to honour those we love and admire.  It is in this spirit that I present this artwork to honour Carol Miller.  Carol’s original signature appears on the front.

Created using the theme of ‘Woman’ and in celebration of the 10th anniversary of THE QUILT – A BREAST CANCER SUPPORT PROJECT, this artwork is part of my series on ‘Passion’.
