Gordana Brelih has a strong, intuitive sense of design coupled with a comprehensive fine arts degree and fashion design experience.

Gordana studied at the Academy of Applied Arts and Design in Belgrade. She immigrated to Canada in1991. Following a successful career in fashion design, and after receiving a strong grounding in traditional quilting, she began experimenting with different techniques. These experiments cultivated a devotion to all forms of quilting and a love of hand-embellishment, free motion embroidery and machine piecing. She has put hundreds of hours into her work, stitch-by-stitch, adding lustrous threads, beads, fibres and non-traditional materials like paper and metal. Her art takes on a life of its own.

Quick sketches or moments of inspiration challenge Gordana to strive for something different. While new techniques are a welcome challenge, colour is a strong element in her work. It is one of the key elements in giving her art its aged or antique look. There is a sense of history with each piece that invites the viewer to take a closer look and see the story that is to be told.

Freedom

Much of my art is motivated by images of nature. Every year I look forward to visiting the zoo and see the peacocks walking so proudly, amazed by their beauty.
