Cheryl Smith http://magpieartworks.com conducted a doll workshop for us last summer. We all used the same pattern, however artistic interpretations and styles came to the fore when we went home and finished up our dolls.

These "First Dolls" were exhibited at the Oshawa Fibre Art Show in Oshawa in the fall of 2006.

Each doll is approximately 20 " high, made of 100% high quality cotton, with embellishments and additions including silk, rayon, wool, satin, organza, decorative yarns, beads, lace, hand embroidery, and whatever suited our fancy.

Thank you Cheryl, for such a fun and creative opportunity!

Delphinia

By Cheryl Smith

I created Delphinia in the fall in anticipation of winter. Blue and white signify the icy cool of winter.

Juwel

by Cheryl Smith

She’s ready for lunch and gallivanting around the town with her fellow Red Hat Society friends. Her body is made from cotton, but her ensemble is pure silk.

Portia

by Janet Rhind

My experience with doll making is not new, but the opportunity to acquire additional skills from a pro like Cheryl was icing on my cake. Portia wanted an embroidered silk body.  Her favorite colour is pink, a dainty colour, so she evolved into a dainty ballerina with pink hair, body and lips.  Since she spends most of her days as a ballerina, she likes to shed her ballet shoes for sandals every once and a while.  As an artist, this experience taught me "anything goes" in doll making!  Portia, with her sweet little pink face, you know she's a charmer!

Isadora

by Donna Funnell

A mysterious, flambouyant and rubenesque woman adorns herself in colourful risque clothing and jewellery. She especially likes embroidered embellishments, silk ribbons and beads. Isadora's outward image reveals her creative spirit inside. Isadora is an alter ego of the artist that created her. She shares a love of fabric, colour, texture, and over the top embellishment.

Fiberella

By Anne Marie Desaulniers

This self-professed queen of fibre is waiting for someone to whisk her away from the trials of working life. She’s a material girl who cannot bear to be separated from her techniques and possessions.  She’s a doll with a mission.  Clothed in rainbow regalia, always searching for new toys and amusements, she never settles for second best.  Sure she has an attitude, but can you honestly blame her?  She’s a star!

Elizabeth R

By Deb Milton

Cheryl’s workshop dolls persuaded me to make one too. So this is Elizabeth Regina, Queen of England 1533-1603 – my favourite period of history. Elizabeth Tudor was a remarkable and formidable woman –  an excellent subject, I thought, for my first doll. I was inspired by the 1971 BBC mini series Elizabeth starring Glenda Jackson. The beautiful costumes included lots of fur and feathered hats for riding – side-saddle of course. Known for her extravagant attire, Elizabeth said that, regardless of the cost, her people would respect a monarch who looked the part. I guess she truly believed in dressing for success!
